Self-protecting distribution transformers incorporate a circuit-breaking safety system that shuts down the transformer in the event of an internal fault. The fault can be the result of an overload, extreme ambient temperature, external fire, overpressure from internal gassing and arcing or oil leaks.

The shutdown prevents explosion, tank rupture or any other external manifestation.
