The GEM 12 is manufactured by Otto Suhner AG. It is an autonomous tapping unit, that is equipped with a programmable mechanical feed system. The GEM 12 does not have a lead screw, only an electric control box with AC-frequency inverter drive. The interchangeable timing belts and pulleys, allows all pitch sizes for M2 up to M12 between 64 and 13 TPI.

To guarantee protection, the GEM 12 is safeguarded against electro-mechanical crash. This protection is made possible by an integrated spring/clutch assembly and feedback from linear scale device.
