It is believed that a standard CSU illumination with a single mode fiber will not be able to fill the microlens-pinhole etendue. This allows more light to be squeezed in via a device that features the right optical design. This fact is exploited and with the help of multi-mode fibers with high performance beam conditioning, delivery of more light in a simultaneous manner and with uniformity is made possible. Uniformity improvements of up to 10x are possible. There are throughput improvements up to 3x. The device features improved optical sectioning. Other noted features are extended wavelength range and improved laser coupling stability.
